IIGS 2011

Capt. Kanwar Harbhajan Singh

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਹਹੂ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਨ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਆਏ ॥
Janam maraṇ ḏuhhu mėh nāhī jan parupkārī āie.
(Those generous, humble beings are above both birth and death)

Capt. Sardar Kanwar Harbhajan Singh ji, founder of The International Institute of Gurmat Studies, passed away on January 30, 2011, while he was visiting his extended family in Mexico City.

Popularly known as “IGS Papa“, he dedicated his entire life to educating Sikh youth about Sikh values and the great Sikh heritage. He was born on September 21st 1936 to Major Jagat Singh, and Sardarni Gurcharan Kaur, a devout couple who raised him with strong Sikh sanskaars. Papa Ji often shared the memory of his visit to Keshgarh Sahib when he was nine years old. A local priest, sensing his curiosity, related several inspiring saakhis from Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s life. Papa Ji felt his whole being drawn to the great Guru Ji; an immense love welled up in his heart. That love of the Guru became the guiding light of Papa’s life which in turn made him a beacon for the Sikh youth across the world.

At the age of nineteen, he founded Young Sikh Missionaries in Lucknow, India. He led and motivated college-going youngsters to take active part in gurpurab seva and formed kirtan groups. He particularly loved to decorate gurdwaras, and take part in “shoe seva”. His peers called him “Singh ji” and followed his example by tying immaculate turbans and turning out as well-dressed, suave, saabat surat Sikhs. In 1972, he renamed his organization Institute of Gurmat Studies and pioneered the co-ed Sikh Youth camping movement. IGS became international when the 12th Sikh Youth Camp was held in Kathmundu, Nepal in 1979.

To date, 85 IIGS camps have been held in India, Nepal, U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Australia, and South East Asia. These include 72 Sikh Youth Camps and 13 family and women’s camps. Thousands of campers were inspired to take Amrit at these camps. Many kirtan groups were formed under his guidance and conducted performances in several countries. He worked passionately towards disseminating knowledge of gurbani through the written and oral word. While he moved audiences with his oratory, IIGS, under his guidance, published several nitnem books with translations, kirtan books, kirtan teacher handbooks and produced kirtan CDs. He also supervised the publication of two children’s books, Dear Takuya and the Royal Falcon that have won much acclaim not merely from Sikhs all over the world but also mainstream educators. Papa was a devoted Sikh, and an excellent orator who could hold audiences of all ages spellbound, as he brought the tales of the Gurus, their message and Sikh history alive. Thousands of Sikh youth from all over the world have attended IIGS camps and owe their love of Sikhi and Sikh swaroop to his inspiration. Founders of many Sikh advocacy and civil rights organizations have been IIGS campers and point to “Papa ji” as the mentor who ignited the spark in them.

Papa moved to the U.S. in 1985 and Southern California became the headquarters of IIGS. In 1986 he started celebrating the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh ji on December 25th in a manner so grand and unparalleled in pomp and opulence that the annual event is now widely known as the Darbar-e-Khalsa. A day long festival of kirtan, speeches and awards for exemplary Sikhs and Sikh organizations culminates each year in a grand finale of the Guru Granth Sahib being sent off in a helicopter amidst thunderous jaikaraas. Papa’s sudden death has shocked tens of thousands of Sikhs whose lives have been touched by him. Their comments on social media sites like Facebook and blog sites such as http://.iigs.wordpress.com etc. show that he will be dearly missed. The Sikh community has lost a rare gem in the passing on of Capt. Sardar Kanwar Harbhajan Singh ji. He is survived by his wife three sons, and four grandchildren.

I first met Papaji as a young kid, at a kirtan in Delhi when he brought his team of young teens to do kirtan. Those shabads and the “josh” and feeling with which they were sung are still in my heart. Years later I reconnected with Papaji when I brought my kids to the camps in the US. Papaji’s efforts to make Sikhi meaningful and real for all of us bore so much fruit. We will miss him and his enthusiasm and his strength. May Waheguruji grant him “charan-sharan” and grant all of us the strength and will to carry on his work.

I have had singular events of meeting Papaji a few times and conversed with him on topics that truly affect the Sikhs.

I can honestly say that he had a vision to spread the Sikhi message to those people beyond the borders of the Sikhs.

Once he told me that when the time comes for him to depart, he envision to hold his head high and in the process be bestowed by the very hands of Guru Gobind Singh. And I believe he left us with his head HIGH.

His memory will stay cherished as long as we stay on the path of missionary Sikh activities. It is time for us to pursue that objective.

The Singh family of Santa Barabara and Durban, South Africa wish to give our condolences to Papa Ji’s entire families around the world. I was fortunate in my life time to have met Papa Ji who has changed my entire life and brought me closer to the Sikh faith. His death brings much grief to the South African community where he was preparing to have the next youth camp. Papa Ji’s message of Chardi Kala will remain with my entire family forever. God bless his soul. Rab Rakh

Papaji was a great visionary with superb organizing skills and an inspiring orator and leader. He was above all a God loving, devout gursikh. He was on a mission to awaken our love for Waheguru. He single handedly transformed the young sikh minds by connecting them to the Gurus/nam.
May Waheguru bless the entire IGS family to bear this immense loss and keep Papji’s mission alive.

The way he was able to captivate audiences, the way he was able to articulate the words of our Guru to a language we can all understand, and the extent to which his message changed lives, Papaji was a role model to thousands. He never preached anything he didn’t do himself and not many people can say that. He had a charismatic, yet commanding personality and he had a sweet heart. He was idealistic yet pragmatic, yet he somehow found the balance. He remains in our heart, mind, and soul now and forever.

My association with Papa was since 1968. I remember when l met him for the first time through Jassi ,he had a towering personality, he was indeed a Unique personality by himself.
I am yet to come across anyone like him. I did attend couple of camps together worked with him. Did sail together during formation & working of IGS, went through all weathers initially.
IGS is the Result/outcome of his ideology ,hard work, passion, knowledge & Guru’s Blessings.
No doubt That he will Remain in our hearts as long as we will live.

    Dear IIGS family,

I had the opportunity to attend my only camp in Dakshai Simla in 1971 due to a lot of persuasion by my cousin brother Kuldeep
(Deepa ) Veerji. And after that life time experience I realized what I would have missed out on, had I not gone. On the camp I immediately saw an outstanding charismatic personality in Papa ji. A unique individual blessed with an amazing powerful force that came from within had to be a divine gift. I saw exceptional leadership qualities in him with a strong will. His humble mission was to hold the finger of the youth in his hand, show them the path of Gursikhi and spread knowledge on how to be a true Gursikh.

An orator par excellence, loved by thousands and thousands over the world, he will be missed dearly.

Although such rare individuals blessed by the Guru and sent on Earth with a defined purpose never die. They live on forever.

Papa ji will live in our hearts forever.

    Love you Papa ji.

We met Papaji in the camp held at dehradun and were overawed by his personality. We at our home are still unable to come to terms with this news. The passion his soul had for the IIGS Gurmat camp is unparalled.

May the IIGS camps flourish as they always did when you were around and may your Contagious Chardi Kala catch on to every camper who ever attends those camps.

We just wish we would have met you earlier in our lives and could get to see more of you.

    Dear all,
“Guru Fateh” Please accept my condolences on the great loss not only to thhe IIGS family but to the entire Sikh community as well.I do not have words to express my sorrow and feel miserable that I could not come to attend the Antim Ardas at Delhi.

I do not know where I would be standing in life today, had it not been for dear BHAPA’s influence ,right from the first camp I attended in 1977 at Manali, followed by others at Kashmir , Kathmandu,Delhi ,Dehradun etc.I was just out of school in 1977 ,when I went for the camp and was greatful to my family that they forced me to go at that time.At that impressionable age , it was great listening to Bhapa’s talk’s and we always got our “batteries Charged” as he used to say, after every talk of his. So great was his oration ,that the words are crystal clear in my mind even to this day. Thanks to his talks explaining the GURU’s Teachings and Practicality of the Sikh religion ,I feel proud to be a sikh. I am sure there would be others who feel the same way.
Its a pity ,having shifted to Jaipur,I could not give much time to the camp activities, but the memories of the camp and Bhapa’s influential talks can always be seen as we try to lead our lives in a Gursikh way,to the best of our ability

Once again my condolences to the bereaved family

    love

I am still uncapable of making myself believe that this incident had occured all of a sudden. To me, not only was Vade Papa an extraordinary person, but he was also one of my greatest inspirations and he will always have a very big spot in my heart. Even though I was not able to see him very often he was able to enlighten my mind with so many lessons and so many sakhis about life and I will never forget them and him. I dearly hope that even though his soul is with Babaji now, all of the teachings that he spent his whole life spreading remain and that we let him rest in peace knowing that we are continuing to use his teachings in our lives and we continue to spread these teachings by finishing what he started.

It was 30th jan mid night, I received this sad message through Ranjit, my brother at LA, that PAPA Ji is no more with us, it so happened that complete picture of his life time dedication to SIKH panth came in front of eyes and sleep went off for the night. Unbelievable, no substitute of his personality, no words to say.
What to talk about our experiences with him, every moment spent with him is memorable and some thing to learn, may it be dedication, discipline in life, guru’s messages delivered by him, Camps movement and organisation. I must say that true “Shrandajali” to departed soul would be to keep IIGS movement live and in more CHARHDIKALA.

It is a great loss to our community, I hope he has someone who will carry the flag of IIGS further. I admire his dedication as a missionary to IIGS and I have lots of good memories with him, learned a lot from his mission about our religion and if IGS was not formed in my childhood. I do not know how I would be connected with our gurus. I joined Papaji in 1971 and attended the first IGS camp in Shahdara Dehli, spent time with him on his scooter, from city to city to arrange for camps and donations. I left New Delhi in 1978 and then re-joined Papaji in 1985 in Vermont Gurdwara Los Angeles. I will miss him a lot. May he rest in peace.

We are so deeply saddened by the loss. He was such an inspirational and larger than life personality. His passion to lead the younger Sikh youth to the Guru’s way of life is what will make us love him forever.
Thank you Papa ji for making us part of the IIGS family and enable Navie and Simar to understand the true meaning of being a sikh.

“Papa ji,” as he was known to family and friends, lived the life of the Sikh ideal – the “Saint-Soldier.”

    February 2, 2011 at 1:13 pm

  50. Papa Ji lived his life on his terms. His passing should evoke a question among people whom he touched and who love and miss him until today, What are you doing with your lives on this earth?

If each of us answer to this question, which our heart feels and tell us, it to be right, then Papa’s passing has transformed in to our lives as he always envisioned.

Guru will always be with him.

A tremendous loss for the Sikh community but his legacy will continue to beacon generations to come. We always drew inspiration from his “ChardiKala” attitude. He dedicated his life teaching Guru’s way of life to Sikh youth and families across the world. He was not only a great spiritual leader but also a true friend to every one.

May Waheguru bless Papa Ji’s soul and give strength to Khalsa panth to live guru’s path, so Papa ji can look upon us with pride he instilled in us.

Today, the Sikh community all over the world is much poorer. We have lost a jewel that touched innumerable lives with his glow. A true mark of a great man is not how he lived but how he helped others live. Papaji had the distinct honor of helping thousands of us understand who we are. The torch he lit will always guide our future generations.

It is a great lose to our community, I hope he has someone who will carry the flag of IIGS further. May he rest in piece.

Papaji was a blessing to the Sikh community. This is a huge loss for us. Papaji had the leadership skills to command and bring people together. He made Sikhism more accessible and understandable for the youth. We would come out of camps fueled with pride and inspired to follow the Guru’s teachings. There will be great void without Papaji however we will continue to benefit from the spark he lit in all of us. Thank you Papaji for your contributions to the Sikh community.

I haven’t met anyone else like Papa Ji. He lit the spark of Sikhi in me and so many others. There is no doubt in my mind that his legacy will remain alive and well for years to come. I give him credit for helping me i my career as a teacher when he wrote a letter of recommendation for me to enter the credential program 20 plus years ago.My last conversation with him was right before Darbar-E-Khalsa 2011 when I told him that we need him for many years to come to continue leading us in the right direction. His reply, “It is your responsiblity now.God Bless you.” His last words to me hold a great meaning for me on a personal level. What an amazing man! Stay well and keep smiling Papa with the one you love the most.

A pen starts to crumble when you want to put a few thoughts of a person larger than life itself, an extraordinary personality who has touched the hearts of many across the continents. Pappaji was a devout Gursikh who had an immense and unflinching love for his guru. A true Gursikh to the core who was a mentor, a teacher, a leader, a captivating orator, a thinker, an organizer and above all had a deep passion for his faith. His tireless organizational skills be it at the sikh camps or at the Darbar-E- Khalsa were examples of his extraordinary zeal and devotion. Pappaji, we will miss your warm smile, your affectionate hugs and your state of chardhikala which was an inspiration to us all. We are honored to have known you.

I am at a loss of word and can’t express how I miss Papa Ji Today. Papa ji was a humble servant of the Guru Ji and worked tirelessly to spread the Guru ji’s word. Although he has departured, he will always live in my heart, mind, and soul. For the past 25 years PapaJi helped many souls like mine to answer the tough qestions about religion, faith, and tradition. Like thousands before me and after, you guided us by your examples and led us to the Guru Granth Sahib Ji for answers. Thank you for giving us the encouragement and faith and the necessary tools to pursue the Truth.
It is true that our world is now void of your smile, great wisdom, and inspiration. However, your teachings, love, and humility lives in the thousands of souls you touched. The words you have spoken will always be remembered by us.
Thank you for all the wonderful memories and showing me the Guru Ji’s ways. May you rest in peace. May Wahe Guru Ji give us the courage and guidance to carry your mission forward.

I have been closely associated with Papa and the IIGS since the last 35 years. He was the true miracle man.
In practically every camp we have had instances of totally atheist or agnostic kids coming to the camp and going back transformed and charged enough to lead the Sikh Panth single handed. In fact in 1975, a boy from south Delhi went back after the camp and in his new found zeal destroyed his father’s well stocked liquor cabinet and bar !!

But what really comes to my mind right now (and it showed the true grit of this man) was the preparatory camp held in Dec 1979 at Tughlakabad forest in Delhi. It was a small but intensive camp for about 30 kids out of which 18 would be chosen to help organize and run the first major camp abroad – in England in the summer of 1980.

One morning the Langar incharge went off to the bank to withdraw cash for provisions. He came back shortly afterwards and took Papaji (he was much younger then and we called him Papa – elder brother) aside and said there wasn’t enough money in the bank. Papaji kept quiet. Here was a young organization nurtured by him, with aspirations of spreading the word of the Guru across the world, and shockingly the group did not have the wherewithal to feed its own members.

But miracles do happen. That evening Sardar Hukam Singh (ex-speaker of the Lok Sabha and later on, the co-founder of Guru Granth Sahib Vidya Kendra at Mehrauli) came to attend the evening Dewan at the camp. He said “It has been my earnest desire to donate something to the IGS (Incidentally, the second ‘I’ was added at the camp in UK, when the IGS truly went international). Unfortunately I could not spare time to come earlier. Please accept my humble apologies and accept this token amount.” That largesse not only carried us through the camp but helped defray other incidental expenses for the UK camp.

Did Papaji do a silent Ardaas that afternoon or would you call it a mere coincidence? It is for you to judge, but I know it was a miracle, just like others which I would love to share with you another time.

You have taught me life like a father; loved me like a brother; made me laugh like a friend and showed me Guru’s path like a fellow Gursikh. It is because of you that today I can be proud of being Guru Gobind Singh ji’s daughter. You taught me faith in Guru by handing (my first) Sukhmani Sahib Gutka when I came to seek help.
